Massachusetts district has spent more than $1 million on security

While school district officials have not yet had a chance to review 29 recommendations set forth in a governor’s task force report on school safety and security, they do have protocols in place to protect children from harm, a school department spokesman said on Friday.

Azell Cavaan, director of communications for the Springfield Public Schools, said district officials haven't had a chance to review the report, but she said schools are equipped with cameras, door buzzers and other security equipment and personnel.

Cavaan said access into schools is tightly controlled and schools practice lockdown strategies and also intruder drills. “These exercises help staff and students know what to do in case of an emergency," she said.
