Local Baptists, in partnership with a national organization, have proposed a new program for Brunswick County Schools that would offer public school students the chance to be released from class for religious instruction once a month at area churches.

The potential release-time program and the group behind it, Brunswick Released Time Bible Education Student Ministries, is a creation of the Brunswick Baptist Association, a group of 49 local churches, and School Ministries Inc., a national organization based in Columbia, S.C., that promotes release-time programs.

According to a copy of the group’s proposal obtained by the StarNews, “participation in classes is entirely voluntary and requires participants to have the written permission of their parents/legal guardians.” It says the program would be “privately funded, free to the public schools and local taxpayers.”
