Minnesota’s law on school fees needs updating

Actions by STRIDE Academy and the Sauk Rapids-Rice school board this month are highlighting the need for more clarity — and fiscal reality — when it comes to Minnesota’s Public School Fee Law.

The law’s intent is obvious: Make sure all students have equal access to public education but still allow school districts the ability to apply charges or fees for materials “supplementary to the requirements for the successful completion of a class or educational program.”

The need for clarity arises regarding two items: School supply lists and fees for technology issued to students. Think computers, laptops and tablets.
