Mississippi district integrates software from Compass Learning

As another school year comes to an end, teachers and students in the Greenwood Public School District in Greenwood, Miss., are already looking ahead. Beginning this summer, the District will offer students and educators a new digital educational tool through Compass Learning, an education software pioneer for more than 40 years, bringing personalized learning to nearly 3,000 Greenwood students.

Designed to increase academic success, Compass Learning software will be utilized in all area schools, including four elementary schools and both Greenwood middle and high schools. Through Compass Learning, students will be able to receive direct instruction and immediate feedback both at school and at home through any web-enabled device.

“As superintendent, I’m excited about the partnership between the Greenwood Public School District and Compass Learning. Utilizing the Compass Learning software will assist us in improving student achievement by extending the learning time of our students,” said Dr. Montrell Greene, Greenwood Public School District Superintendent. “Also, students will be able to use the computer to improve their reading and language arts skills at home and at school. Working with Compass Learning will meet goals two, three and four of our district, which are to improve student achievement, increase the capacity and effectiveness of all stakeholders, and fully integrate technology across all operations.”

For elementary and middle school students, courses offered through Compass Learning will focus on improving literacy skills through Language Arts. At the high-school level, courses will include English, Geometry, Biology, and U.S. History as well as Credit Recovery and ACT Prep. These courses will supplement instruction in the classroom, be integrated into lesson plans, and provide data to help teachers improve student performance on both in-class and statewide assessments.

“We realize educators today are looking to individualize learning to better meet each student’s needs,” said Eileen Shihadeh, Vice President at Compass Learning. “Together with the Greenwood Public School District, we will help teachers create personalized academic goals for their students, as well as a pathway for students to reach those goals.”

As part of the roll-out, Compass Learning is already providing professional development to Greenwood summer school teachers who plan to implement the software during summer intervention. This professional development will be expanded to all teachers before the fall of 2014, when the software will be fully implemented throughout all schools. Parents have also received training and an introduction to the program so that they can monitor and help their children use Compass Learning software at home.
