The Mobile County school system has rehired or found new jobs for about 850 of the more than 1,000 teachers and other employees that it fired or put on mandatory transfer status at the beginning of the summer, following votes by the school board Monday.

That includes all but five of about 500 tenured teachers or employees who were transferred to other schools, and about 350 of the 583 non-tenured teachers who received pink slips in May. The number of displaced employees was higher this summer than in typical years due to a variety of factors, said Bryan Hack, executive director of human resources for the school system.

Those included: about 125 positions that won’t be funded by the state; about 215 employees in Satsuma and Chickasaw, which split from the county district; about 100 teachers from Spencer and Westlawn elementaries in Mobile, which were reconstituted and combined this summer; and a number of positions that were gained or lost as dozens of schools were rezoned.
