Knee-jerk responses make bad law, and that’s why we support Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon’s decision Monday to veto a bill that would allow specially designated and trained teachers and administrators to bring concealed weapons into classrooms.
In the aftermath of the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting in 2012, a number of states, including Missouri, went this route. The hope is that a teacher would be able to throw down the blackboard chalk, snatch up a 9 millimeter and stop a school rampage before it escalates.
That’s unrealistic, even in the best-case scenario.
