Mount Vernon hires Kenneth Hamilton as superintendent

The Mount Vernon Board of Education has chosen a longtime New Jersey school administrator as the city's next superintendent.

Kenneth Hamilton, currently the superintendent in suburban Monroe Township, will begin a three-year contract in Mount Vernon on Aug. 11. He will replace interim Superintendent Judith Johnson, a former Peekskill schools chief who came out of retirement in 2012 to lead the city's schools.

Hamilton previously served in various educational roles in Newark, Plainfield and Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
