The District 109 Board of Education unanimously approved the purchases, while officials engage in 11th-hour negotiations for large-lot discounts. Google's Chrome system is used in many school districts and employs the Android operating platform and versatile "Cloud" technology.
Jill Maraldo, district Director of 21st Century Skills, said "this brings us just one step closer to being a one-to-one district, one device per child. That doesn't mean they would have a device to bring home but that they have access to a device at any given time, whether it's a laptop or tablet device."
The purchase will include six Google Chrome classroom sets — 25 devices each — at Caruso and Shepard Middle Schools, and four classroom sets each at Kipling, South Park, Walden and Wilmot elementary schools. Three classroom sets of Nexus 7 tablets will go to each of the six district schools.
