Houston ISD unveiled four new school mascots today: the Lamar High School Texans, the Westbury High School Huskies, the Welch Middle School Wolf Pack and the Hamilton Middle School Huskies.
The mascots were selected by each of the schools after the school board changed district policy on school symbols. The policy “prohibits use of any race or ethnic group as a mascot or nickname.”
Lamar’s mascot was previously the Redskins, and Westbury’s the Rebels. Welch and Hamilton were the Warriors and Indians, respectively. Finalized early this year, the policy change sparked widespread debate over long-held school traditions and the district’s goal to embrace diversity and become more culturally sensitive.
