Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott Monday appointed an interim acting principal to take the reins of Stuyvesant High School in the midst of a high-profile cheating scandal.
Mr. Walcott tapped Jie Zhang, a school network administrator who was principal of Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, a specialized high school, for five years. Her son graduated from Stuyvesant in 2008 and her daughter is a rising junior there.
Stuyvesant’s principal, Stanley Teitel, abruptly announced Friday that he would retire on Sept. 1. The city is investigating whether he and his staff followed proper procedures after they discovered alleged widespread cheating on state and city exams in June.
Top officials at the Department Education didn’t find out about the alleged cheating until a week after Teitel confiscated a cellphone from a student during a foreign-language exam and found texts to other students. The city ultimately threw out test results for 71 students suspected of sending or receiving text messages about the state Regents exams and a city test. Six students face suspension.
