New York high school graduation rates up statewide

High school graduation rates are up slightly statewide, and so are the numbers of seniors earning high enough marks on state English and math exams to be deemed ready for college, the state Education Department reported Monday.

The percentage of students in the Class of 2013 who graduated on-time after four years of high school rose to 74.9 percent statewide, up from 74 percent for the Class of 2012 and 71.8 percent for the Class of 2009, according to the department.

The latest figures are for the 2009 "cohort" -- that is, students who entered high school in fall 2009.
