Newark (N.J.) Schools, Agencies Work to Curb Student Hunger

Some students at Carson Elementary School count the days until Thanksgiving or winter break with excitement.

But Principal Sara Brlas knows some students dread being away from school for a few days — especially the cafeteria.

“We so often think of holidays coming around and everybody having a great feeling of joy. But for our children who come to school and get free and reduced lunch, when the holidays come they are not as happy as others,” she said. “They don’t know if they will be hungry or not.”

In October 2011, Carson had 411 students apply for free or reduced lunch, the highest number of elementary students in the district and in the county.
