Ohio Bio-Med Science Academy introduces rural students to science ed

Ninth-graders Sean Fejes and Devan Mathie huddled over their solar grills intently listening for a sizzle as clouds gathered overhead.

Earlier in the day, the two 15-year-old students and other classmates at Bio-Med Science Academy in Rootstown used quadratic equations to construct U-shaped cardboard troughs lined with aluminum foil. The formulas helped the ninth-graders determine where the strongest light rays would hit the grill under the noon sun.

"If we get it right and put the hot dog at the focal point, it will cook," Sean explained.
