Oregon rejects sponsorship of Montessori school

The State Board of Education on Tuesday rejected sponsorship of a new Montessori school in Salem, citing concerns about whether the public charter school would end up serving the disadvantaged students it targets.

Board members also said state officials should focus on increasing the academic achievement of the four charter schools it currently oversees and other priorities.

"I'm incredibly torn," said Serilda Summers-McGee, the board's vice-chairwoman. "But I don't feel our current charter schools are performing even at a successful level, let alone an exceptional level."
