Oregon school shooting: deadly violence in schools still rare, statistics show

After a 15-year-old opened fire in Reynolds High School this week and killed a fellow student, parents across the country faced the question: Are our kids safe in school?

The reality is that although school shootings have permeated the national consciousness in recent years, deadly violence in schools is rare, data show. For example:

  • Of the 563,000 students in Oregon schools, 17 were disciplined for having rifles, shotguns or handguns in their possession in 2012-13; another 29 were caught with “other firearms,” which the Oregon Department of Education defines as anything from a starting pistol to a flare gun.
