Outraged West New York Educator Petitioning to Turn School Board into Elective Positions

A fed-up West New York assistant teacher has started a petition to turn the town’s school board from appointive into elective positions.

Carlos Flores, a special education assistant teacher at School 1, said his petition would add a question to the next general election ballot asking if residents want to amend the education ordinance to change the town from a Type I school district to a Type II.

In a Type I district, the Board of Education members are appointed in West New York’s case by Mayor Felix Roque. In a Type II district, the board members are elected.

“They should be selected by the people, not appointed by the mayor and influenced by his political interests,” he said.
