Despite the opposition it heard, the Southern Lehigh School Board has decided to close one of its three elementary schools.

The board voted 6-3 Monday to close Lower Milford Elementary School and demolish Hopewell Elementary School. The district would then build a 57,000-square-foot school — about 5,000 square feet larger than the existing one — on the Hopewell property. Lower Milford students will be shuffled to the new school at Hopewell and to Liberty Bell.

The plan will cost the district $17.75 million. School board President Corinne Gunkle said there is no set timeline and that it will be years before the Lower Milford school closes.
