Panel eyes $1M extra for a Mass. district

Flush with close to $1 million more than it had to work with earlier this week, the School Committee examined a new budget plan Thursday that would save busing to the high school, retain many teaching positions and prevent deep cuts to the arts and other electives at the high school and middle school.

The committee, however, did not vote on Superintendent Brian Salzer’s spending plan for the additional $985,000 the schools are receiving as a result of Tuesday’s successful $2.5 million Proposition 2½ override vote.

Instead, members called another special meeting for Tuesday at 6 p.m., where they will hear from district administrators and other experts throughout the school system about the new spending plan.
