There’s more to Dan Nelson’s job than a mop and a broom.
Nelson is the New Hanover School's head custodian, and his normal day includes the usual thankless cleaning and fix-up chores he’s grown accustomed to during his 12 years in the district.
But when a technology grant and national recognition became available, Nelson shifted gears and found a way to really clean up.
Last week, the small school won a $48,000 grant offered by the Jimmie Johnson Foundation. And it was all thanks to an attention-grabbing essay written by Nelson, who happens to be a big NASCAR fan and an admirer of Johnson’s No. 48 car.
