Personal Tech Tools Now Welcome at West Hills

Many schools tell kids to leave their cellphones, iPods and other gadgets at home or at least stowed in backpacks for the day — to varying degrees of success.

This school year, West Hills STEM Academy will try a new approach: go ahead and bring them.

The school will pilot a new policy allowing kids to bring their technology, joining a growing number of school districts that are allowing or encouraging kids to bring their devices to school with so-called "bring your own" device or technology policies.

West Hills Principal Lisa Heaman said that teachers can choose how kids can use their devices in their classrooms — whether that means leaving them in backpacks or using them during lessons — and they'll be allowed to use them in the hallway and on playgrounds.
