During a meeting with the police chief, Sioux Falls School Board members said they’re comfortable with changes he is making to the school resource officer program.
Police Chief Doug Barthel announced last month that the department no longer would dedicate three officers to giving fifth-grade students lessons on substance abuse, peer pressure and bullying. Police officers and teachers worked together to create the “I Can” curriculum to replace D.A.R.E. in 2009, but Barthel said last week “a lot of these topics and issues are already being covered in the classroom anyway.”
The school safety officer, who visits elementary schools to deliver a range of safety lessons, also will be reassigned.
