Port Chester, N.Y. teachers praise Common Core, cite challenges

New York State Education Commissioner John King heard positive reviews for the Common Core learning standards during a Thursday morning visit to the JFK Magnet School, but also got a lesson on the challenges facing a relatively poor suburban district with lots of students who speak Spanish at home.

A group of Port Chester teachers had early state training on the new Common Core standards, so the district had an edge as the new grade-by-grade standards took effect last year. On Thursday, teachers and parents who met with King in the school library said the staff was adjusting to new lesson plans for each grade.
