Among the factors home buyers weigh when making a decision is the quality of schools, and private ratings services can factor in heavily to those decisions, according to real estate agents.
However, some of those ratings may be less than reliable, the superintendent of St. Mary’s public schools said, especially when they come in the form of anonymous comments from people claiming to be parents and students.
“It’s very important to them, the school quality,” when people look for a new home, said Bud Humbert, president of the Southern Maryland Association of Realtors and a Realtor with Century 21.
Like other real estate agents contacted, Humbert said he directs prospective home buyers to individual school websites and other education sites to do their own research.
“We allow the school systems to speak for themselves,” he said.
