Report: Detroit Public Schools Authorized Charter Schools Among Lowest Performing Statewide

It’s a first of its kind look into how the largest authorizers of charter schools are doing with the schools they’re responsible for, and it was compiled after State Board members asked for such a report in mid-January.

The report was completed by researchers at the Education Policy Center at Michigan State University.

State Board President John Austin said at the board’s Jan. 15 meeting that the analysis was necessary to determine which authorizers are doing a good job and which aren’t. Authorizers, he and other board members said at the time, should be held accountable for the performance of their schools.
