A $54.6 million renovation and expansion of West Middle Elementary School will include a rooftop playing field for middle schoolers.
At West Middle, "this will be the first time that middle school kids will have a dedicated play area that was not asphalt," said Sal Salafia, a program manager for ARCADIS/O&G, which manages Hartford's school construction program. The site of the Asylum Hill neighborhood school is "so small, so we're going to remedy that."
In a first for Hartford public schools, that remedy means placing artificial turf atop a three-story school addition that will be constructed in the next two years. A 12-foot-high fence will surround the field, which will not be visible from Asylum Avenue, Salafia said.
"I'm very excited about this," said Superintendent Christina Kishimoto, calling it "a safe space."
