Santa Clara County chief chosen as lone finalist to head Texas district

Xavier De La Torre, the embattled chief of the Santa Clara County Office of Education, late Wednesday was named the lone finalist for superintendent of the Ysleta Independent School District in El Paso.

In a split vote, the seven-member Ysleta board selected De La Torre, 50, as its remaining candidate to take over the district, which has 45,000 students in about five dozen schools. The district has a 21-day waiting period for candidates before they are selected, so the Ysleta board is expected to officially hire De La Torre on March 5.

De La Torre could not immediately be reached after the board selected him in a 4-3 vote.
