GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Sunday revised recent remarks in which he said President Barack Obama’s goals for higher education showed him to be a “snob.”

Mr. Santorum, appearing on “Fox News Sunday,’’ said he made the comment based on his impression that the president had called on all Americans to go to college.  The president had called on Americans to commit to one year or more of higher education or career training.

“If it was an error, then I agree with the president that we should have options for people to go to a variety of different training,” he said.

Mr. Santorum also reiterated his opposition to birth control.  “I’m reflecting the views of the church that I believe in,” said Mr. Santorum, who is Catholic.  “We used to be tolerant of those beliefs.”

Mr. Santorum, however, said his personal views weren’t the issue.  What mattered, he said, was that the government shouldn’t force religious institutions to take actions, such as offering birth-control coverage in their health plans, when it conflicts with their beliefs.
