Sassafras ships K2 v7.1 - enhances software identification and hardware discovery

Sassafras Software, a pioneer in Software Asset Management (SAM) and IT Asset Management (ITAM), has released a major upgrade of its award-winning product, K2 - KeyAuditor & KeyServer. Version 7.1 introduces a new software Product Recognition Service (PRS) to accompany K2’s extensive SAM and ITAM capabilities. Now software licensing administrators will automatically receive software product updates based on software discovered across their organization.

Product Recognition Service (PRS)

K2’s new Product Recognition Service automatically analyzes the software discovered on computers within your organization and provides relevant product details for use in license management, software optimization, and cost reduction. With the addition of PRS, one of the most complicated configuration tasks has been eliminated for many products.

K2 employs a sophisticated software discovery method that gathers information from multiple sources, including file properties, installer receipts, ISO/IEC 19770-2 Software ID tags, MSI information, Add/Remove program entries, and other system variables. Sassafras analyzes this complex matrix of data to enhance accuracy of product recognition. Product profiles are delivered automatically for software discovered on K2 managed computers so the software asset manager is not burdened with the task of keeping up to date.

Enhanced Hardware Discovery

K2 v7.1 integrates with Active Directory (or any other LDAP Server) to identify candidate computers for deployment of the K2 Client agent. A new report conveniently links to your network directory servers so you can easily compare the list of computers under K2 management with the list of computers in your directory. If the report shows a discrepancy, the directory information can be updated and/or the K2 client can be deployed to achieve the desired management coverage of your organization’s computing assets.

Extended Active Directory Integration

There are multiple ways that K2 can integrate with Active Directory for user and computer authentication. K2 v7.1 extends AD integration by allowing you to mirror your Active Directory Organizational Unit (OU) structure for use in restricting access to your software assets. In v7.1, K2 can automatically assign computers to distinct “Divisions” for license compliance and reporting purposes based on the organization of your OUs.

Availability and Pricing

K2 v7.1 begins shipping on May 28, 2013. Customers who purchased K2 after March 1, 2013, and customers with a current Upgrade Subscription Plan, will receive K2 version 7.1 at no charge. Pricing is based on the number of client devices placed under K2 management. K2 is licensed as a complete package including all components and basic technical support at no additional charge. Upgrade costs for customers without an Upgrade Subscription Plan are computed based on the size of each K2 installation and its last purchase date. Discounts are available for academic and non-profit organizations.
