School boards should have final say in district matters in Louisiana

The House Education Committee took a stand for local autonomy when it approved House Bill 703 last week.

The bill, if approved by the full Legislature, would prohibit the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education from approving charter schools that had been previously rejected by a school board in a local district. The law would apply only to districts that scored A, B or C in the state's accountability system.

Among those opposing the bill were state Reps. Nancy Landry, R-Lafayette, and Simone Champagne, R-Erath.
