South Dakota schools to try new assessment tests

South Dakota has been given the green light from the U.S. Department of Education to field test new state assessments this spring.

A waiver, approved earlier this year, will allow schools to take new assessments in math and language arts in lieu of the Dakota STEP test, the previous assessment.

South Dakota schools are teaching under the Common Core State Standards for the first time this year, and the state has adopted corresponding new assessments as well. Students in grades 3 through 8 and 11 will take the new Smarter Balanced tests for the first time, beginning in a few weeks.
