For the St. Paul district's tech plan, Dell is an early favorite

Three months before November's levy referendum, St. Paul Public Schools had a frontrunner for a multimillion-dollar project key to the district's technology plan on the ballot.

The district had already dismissed the runner-up for the project and enlisted Texas-based Dell to help explain it to voters, newly released documents show.

It wasn't until two months after the vote, though, that the public, the teachers union and school board members learned Dell was the district's pick. Administrators told the school board then it had to pick a vendor promptly -- or risk holding up the entire plan.
