State highway dollars tapped for K-12 education costs in Kansas

For school superintendents tracking their budgets and state aid payments, something is different this year. Tens of millions of dollars in aid are going to districts not from the State General Fund but rather the State Highway Fund.

From the school district point of view, the source of the payments doesn’t pose concerns. The Kansas State Department of Education informed superintendents to make sure they knew how to handle the change.

“It is not necessary to track highway funds separately in your budget,” the department wrote in an email to school districts last month. “Please deposit them in the appropriate fund as illustrated below.”
