Student Wins School Appeal

The state commissioner of education has granted 14-year-old Elizabeth Leclaire’s appeal of a local decision that denied her enrollment in Norfolk County Agricultural High School. 

Elizabeth’s wish to be a freshman at the vocational-technical high school in Walpole was recently blocked by town officials, who said the estimated $44,000 in tuition and transportation would cause the town financial hardship.

“She actually starting crying with joy when she got the commissioner’s letter,” Elizabeth’s mother, Gail Leclaire, said of the overturned decision.

When awaiting word on the appeal, Town Administrator Peter M. Jankowski said the town supports vocational education but had to balance the $44,000 cost for one student with the educational needs of all students.
