Syracuse, N.Y. teachers, parents call for action on school discipline

A newly formed teachers and parents group asked the Syracuse school board tonight to ensure that violent or disruptive students are quickly removed from their regular classrooms and transferred to alternative programs.

Many of those students in middle or high school should be moved to "evening schools," the group said in an action plan submitted to the board. There they would get both academic instruction and "services directed toward social/emotional growth of the student and support for the family."

Elementary school students who repeatedly act out violently should be placed in a separate classroom within their schools through the end of the school year, the plan says.
