Syracuse Schools to Undergo Major Teacher Shuffle This Fall

The drastic overhauls are required by federal and state education officials because the schools are among the lowest performing in New York in terms of test scores, graduation rates and rates of improvement.

Laura Kelley, the district’s chief academic officer, acknowledged the moves will add stress to a system already struggling with budget deficits, teacher evaluations and a new, common curriculum in all of its schools.

But she said the district has no choice but to comply, and that she understands the need for dramatic action.

“Things have been pretty stagnant in terms of underperformance for a long time here in the district, so it’s time to do things very differently,” she said.
