Sarah Leister, 18, chose a fictitious spouse out of a hat.

She landed a chef, one of the lowest paid spouses in a cast of imaginary husbands and wives in her personal finance class at Champlain Valley Union High School in Hinesburg.

Next it was time to blend pragmatism with romance. Leister, a resident of Williston, lowered her housing budget by $40,000 and changed the parameters of her online real estate search.
