There will be a few more teachers in area schools as students head back to class Monday in Onslow and Carteret counties.
After three years of not filling open positions, Onslow County Schools hired more teachers and support staff for the upcoming academic year due in part to a significant increase in enrollment last year. “One reason for growing the staff is we gained 750 students last fall,” said Suzie Ulbrich, the school system’s public information assistant.
The school district added 111 licensed positions this year compared to last year; some are positions that were not filled last year and some are new due to the additional students, she said. Of the 111 added positions, 89 are teachers and four are assistant principals so that there is now an assistant principal in every school and two at each high school.
