Tulsa Public Schools looks to Teach for America for help with teacher shortage

Tulsa Public Schools is seeking some temporary relief for its teaching shortage from recruiting partner Teach for America, but the national nonprofit is struggling to keep pace with the growing demand.

TPS officials will ask the Tulsa school board on Thursday to formalize its request for 100 instead of 75 new recruits for the 2014-15 academic year.

Nearly 400 teachers retired or resigned from TPS in 2012-13, and the district began the current academic year short-handed and never caught up. Vacancies in teaching positions have ranged from 30-49 at various times, with the current tally hovering near 40.
