Virginia district superintendent leaving for statewide position

Billy Haun is leaving his position as assistant superintendent for student learning at Albemarle County Public Schools for a post as the state’s chief academic officer, effective Sept. 1.

As chief academic officer, he will manage the state education department’s instruction division for pre-K through grade 12, help to shape programs that emphasize college and career readiness and work to enhance student learning and achievement, according to a news release.

“[Superintendent of instruction] Steve Staples already has talked with me about his goal of developing more meaningful assessments of student learning than simply SOL tests,” Haun said in a prepared statement. “I am excited about the potential this goal has to strengthen the alignment of K-12 curriculum with college and career requirements.”
