Virginia schools combat achievement gap with intensive tutoring

The teachers at Ruffner Academy call it "boot camp."

They tried it last year, pulling struggling students out of their electives for intensive tutoring before they sat down to take the state's Standards of Learning exams.

The weeks of focused help paid off, they said. The Norfolk school's pass rate in math jumped 14 percentage points, with black, white and Hispanic students all making gains.
