West Michigan Lawmakers Backing Grand Rapids District Overhaul

State Rep. Lisa Posthumus Lyons, R-Alto, and Sen. Dave Hildenbrand, R-Lowell Township, have written letters supporting the Grand Rapids superintendent and school board's planned major overhaul of the district to improve achievement and finances.

The school board will vote Monday, Dec. 17, on Superintendent Teresa Weatherall Neal's plan to transform the district in an effort to make its pockets of excellence the norm through new and expanded programs, and to right-size to address enrollment decline by closing 10 buildings and consolidating others.

Lyons, chair of the House Education Committee, said if the district's transformation plan "is approved, embraced, and fully implemented in a timely fashion, it could very well set the standard for the entire state."
