Any educator will tell you that scoring essays on a standardized test is one of the most time consuming parts of the process.

In this time of budget cuts and looking for the quick way to get the most work done, the ‘Robo Reader’ was invented. The E-Rater (one type of Robo Reader) is an automated reader than can supposedly grade thousands of essays in mere seconds. This reader has predetermined criteria built into the system like the appropriate length of each sentence, length of each paragraph, and/or specific words used that either higher or lower the grade.

The only problem with this program is that it cannot discriminate truth from fiction, a good short paragraph as compared to a poorly written long paragraph, and/or a string of complex words that are formatted correctly, but make no sense to the essay!
