In recent years, the day-to-day work of teachers and administrators has become thickly infused with strict guidelines that, in theory, are supposed to bring a uniform quality to public education. Educators spend enormous amounts of time demonstrating that they are meeting these standards.

After the Katonah-Lewisboro School District decided to close its elementary school of the same name, Superintendent Paul Kreutzer resigned, effective immediately. Michael Jumper, the assistant superintendent for business, has been named acting school superintendent.

The superintendent of the northeast Kansas school district that serves children from the U.S. Army’s Fort Riley plans to retire. Geary County superintendent Ron Walker told administrators and staff on Wednesday he will retire at the end of the current academic year. Walker has led United School District 475 for 10 years.

Wake County Superintendent Jim Merrill is attributing “transparency and openness” with helping persuade voters to approve the $810 million school construction bond issue in October. Merrill talks about the bond campaign in an article in the January edition of District Administration magazine that looks at how school districts can win bond issues. Wake is cited in the article as a success story.

At least 250 million of the world's 650 million primary school age children are unable to read, write or do basic mathematics, according to a report Wednesday commissioned by the U.N. education agency. The report found that 130 million are in primary school but have not achieved the minimum benchmarks for learning, and almost 120 million have spent little or no time in a classroom, including 57 million youngsters who are not attending school.
