The time has come for the federal and state governments and educators to realize that it is necessary to require students – especially high school athletes – to undergo ECG screening for heart irregularities. Let’s do everything we can to avoid losing any more children to sudden death.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress released the latest national test scores. Seventy-four percent of students scored below the grade-appropriate level in math. In reading, just 38 percent of seniors scored at or above grade level and one-quarter are reading below grade level.

Chicago Public Schools unveiled a $423 million construction and renovation plan for 2015 that directs nearly half of the money toward facilities on the city's North and Northwest sides.

Fuel Education is expanding its portfolio of more than 500 online and blended courses and titles for pre-K12 with over 25 new additions for the 2014-2015 school year. Multiple new math courses for middle and high school students, new career readiness electives and more have been added.

Google is launching Classroom, a new offering in its Google Apps for Education to provide students and teachers with a central place to create, store, organize and provide feedback for classroom assignments. The service is in beta and available only in some schools.

Maryland's Interagency Committee on School Construction has been ordered to work with other state departments on a study on school construction. The committee is charged with making recommendations to increase funding for school construction, including the use of lease payments or other alternative financing methods.

School districts in the Chicago and St. Louis suburbs would see major cuts to state aid while downstate schools would see gains under a proposal that would drastically overhaul Illinois' complicated school funding formula for the first time in almost two decades.

A lawsuit filed in Shelby County alleges that the Alabama State Department of Education and two school districts are moving too slowly to implement a ban on employee payroll deductions for groups engaged in political activity.

Colorado's 2014-2015 school finance package was repassed on the final day of the 2014 legislative session. The School Finance Act increases Total Program Funding, the combination of state and local spending that pays for basic school operations, to $5.91 billion in 2014-15 from $5.76 billion this year.

Public school letter grades could not plunge during a two-year move to the Common Core academic standards under a bill that won approval. The proposal is aimed at softening the impact of the national tests that go with Common Core, which is set to take full effect for the 2014-2015 school year.

The Delaware State Board of Education can study more closely the impact charter schools have on surrounding districts and impose conditions on them under new proposed legislation. It replaces a more controversial bill that allowed board officials to reject new charters based on the impact they would have on existing schools.

Ohio voters approved 69 percent of the school levies on the May 6 ballot, the second-highest approval rate in the last decade. Statewide, Ohioans voted in favor of 102 of 148 school taxes on the primary ballot. Voters approved 90 percent of renewal taxes but only 41 percent of new ones.

At the bottom of the issue of teachers boycotting tests is the fact that federal, state and city bureaucracies keep imposing more and more standardized tests on schools. There seems to be little thought of how this will impact teachers, principals and teacher’s aides.
