On Sept. 20, Jaime Casap, senior education evangelist at Google, Inc., gave the keynote presentation at the District Administration Leadership Institute Summit at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort in Phoenix, Ariz. Casap had the audience thinking about the meaning of true educational vision and where we need to be in the future with regard to creating a learning environment that brings out the best in every child. A summary of his keynote is below.

CoSN is now accepting nominations for the association's 2013 Withrow Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Award and TEAM Award, which annually recognize an individual and a team, respectively, who have demonstrated exceptional technology leadership in K-12 education. Winners will be celebrated at the CoSN 2013 conference on March 10-13, 2013, in San Diego, CA.

Digital citizenship programs, focusing on safe and appropriate use of technology by students, have never been more important. In this web seminar, Mike Ribble, a consultant and author of Digital Citizenship in Schools, discussed the nine elements of digital citizenship; and Greg French, CIO of Woodford (Ky.) Schools, outlined the district's implementation. They were joined by Enterasys Director of Education Jonathan Kidwell and Director of Vertical Solutions Robert Nilsson.

Pinellas County Schools approved the Florida Virtual Academy, a new public charter school which will be open to families in Pinellas County. Set to open in 2013, the new public school will serve grades K8 and expand to high school in subsequent years.

Rocketship Discovery Prep is a boxy, two-story elementary school wedged between a building materials company and a storm-water spillway in a run-down Latino neighborhood off Highway 101 in San Jose, Calif. The Rocketship network now serves students who are nearly all poor and who mostly don't speak English.

The Athens (Ala.) Board of Education approved a technology project totaling $449,000 that includes LAN upgrades and wireless equipment installations at Athens High School, Athens Middle School, Julian Newman Elementary and Brookhill Elementary School.

Brookline-based Beaver Country Day School has been awarded a Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam grant of $10,000 to create an automated robotic vehicular independence system that can carry up to 50 pounds for wheelchair-bound individuals or those needing hands-free help to transport cargo. Called JARVIS, students will showcase their prototype at EurekaFest at MIT in June.

School principals are in the middle of a balancing act when it comes to security. They need to create a welcoming, supportive open environment for students, parents, and credible community visitors who have legitimate purposes in their buildings, while they also have to keep out individuals who potentially have "ill intentions," says Kenneth Trump, president of National School Safety and Security Services, a national consulting firm specializing in school security and emergency preparedness training, school security assessments and school and crisis counseling services.
