School is back in session in the Kent School District, after teachers voted 94-percent in favor of ending their strike. The strike delayed school for about two weeks. The union says teachers didn't get everything they wanted - but they finally got a voice. Deborah Drake is an English teacher at Kent-Meridian High School. She's glad the new contract keeps her overall load at no more than 147 students a day. But she says class size is a bigger problem at her kids' school.
Deborah Drake: "My kids go to Jenkins Creek Elementary, and what their teachers put up with, that's what kept me going."
Elementary school teachers in Kent had up to 34 students in their classrooms. Under the new contract, the biggest classes will be 29 students in grades K through 3, and 32 in grades 4 through 6. Each teacher was facing a fine of 200 dollars a day if they had stayed on strike. The two-year contract eliminates some meetings and gives teachers an average raise of three percent.
