In arguing for national curriculum standards and testing, and the revealing of results "right down to the school level," Bennett and Paige propose a culture of shame to force change. (By the way, I would hope that private schools would also be forced to participate, especially private Christian schools. The public deserves to know how well they are doing if the public is expected to support them through a voucher system that includes them.) This shame and blame strategy has worked especially well in the national welfare system, as we have seen as generations of unemployed and underemployed Americans have freed themselves from poverty by sheer effort. This should also work to liberate children from ignorance, right? |
