AASA names Alton L. Frailey its next president

Alexis Kirijan was named the first female superintendent of Scranton School District in Pennsylvania

Alton L. Frailey, superintendent of Katy ISD in Texas and president of the Texas Association of School Administrators, was elected 2015-16 president-elect of AASA, and will begin his post in July.

Frailey became Katy ISD chief in 2007, after previously serving as chief of DeSoto ISD in Texas and Cincinnati Public Schools. “AASA champions the efforts to improve the lives” of public school children, Frailey says. “I look forward to advancing the mission in my new role.”

Michelle Zundal, a high school principal in Ashland School District in Oregon, won the 2015 National Women in School Leadership Award in the central office administrator/principal category from the School Superintendents Association in February.

Zundal has worked in the district since 1995, and as principal of Ashland High School since 2010. She has increased student achievement, college and career education, and teacher professional development during her tenure.

Birmingham City Schools Interim Superintendent Spencer Horn will receive the 2015 National Academy Foundation Janet Linton Leadership Award for his work leading a district program that helps students prepare for college and careers. The award covers the district’s programs in finance, hospitality and tourism, information technology, health science, and engineering. Interested students participate in small learning communities in each subject.

The award will be presented at a conference in July.

Alexis Kirijan was named the first female superintendent of Scranton School District in Pennsylvania in March. She retired as the chief strategy and development officer in Atlanta Public Schools last year.

Kirijan’s plans for Scranton include balancing the district’s 2015 budget, which required the school board to borrow $10 million. She will also negotiate a new teachers’ contract after she begins the job in July.

Nathan R. Monell started his job as executive director of the National PTA this month. He was formerly president and CEO of the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships, which is the advocacy and training organization for the U.S. Department of Education’s Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP).

The National PTA is the oldest and largest volunteer child advocacy association in the United States.
