Youth internet addiction has reached a desperate and concerning level — so much so that it's resulting in legal action. Most recently, two California teens were charged with "conspiracy and willfully mingling a pharmaceutical with food" after one of them drugged her parents' milkshakes to bypass a 10 p.m. internet curfew. When children begin drugging their own parents for extra minutes on the web, the issue has gone from comical to dangerous, and something needs to change.

A student was shot and wounded at a rural California high school Thursday and a student suspect was taken into custody, officials said. The shooting occurred about 9 a.m. at Taft Union High School, a community of fewer than 10,000 people amid oil and natural gas production fields about 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles. A shotgun was used in the attack, officials said.

All district schools in Steubenville, Ohio -- center of a highly charged teen rape case -- were under precautionary lockdown for about 90 minutes Tuesday because of a shooting threat made on social media, WTOV-TV reports.

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller announced Thursday he supports a bill that pushes school corporations to enter into formal relationships with local law enforcement. The relationships would put in place school resource officers by providing state grant funding.

In the wake of last week’s deadly school shooting in Connecticut, Miami-Dade police have arrested a 16-year-old student at Miami Lakes Educational Center who threatened on Twitter to “shoot up this school this Friday.”

Schools around the country are reviewing security plans, adding extra law enforcement patrols and readying counselors for the first day of classes since a shooting massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut.
