In September, Glacier Hills Elementary School (Eagan, Minn.), a science magnet school, will open a new laboratory that combines science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. The "STEAM room" will allow students to create objects using new tools, such as a 3D printer and laser etcher, when exploring scientific concepts.

The Lenawee Intermediate School District (Adrian, Mich.) opened the Center for a Sustainable Future, a $4 million, 9,000-square-foot building. The school and its surrounding 75 acres of fields and forests will serve as a living laboratory for the future of agriculture.

Executives from Google Inc., Microsoft Corp., and other leading firms want to require all Massachusetts public schools to teach computer science, so local tech companies don’t have to rely on foreign workers to fill future programming and engineering jobs.

VideoANT is a free tool for collaboratively annotating videos. I first wrote about VideoANT back in 2010. Recently, as I learned from Nathan Hall, VideoANT received a major facelift that makes it easier to use than it was before. The first improvement to note is that the service is now built on HTML5, which means that Flash is no longer needed.

Google SMS provided a great way for students to learn right from their phones. Sadly, now Google's SMS solutions are gone. Google's decision to streamline their services leaves behind many of our students who no longer have access to the internet. Fortunately, there are other options.

The Akron Digital Academy, started by the Akron public school system in 2002 to capture some of the students leaving to study online, will no longer be associated with the public school system due to a change in the law that prohibits sponsors from sitting on the academy's board.

Children in elementary school at the Huntington County (Ind.) Community School Corporation during the 2013-2014 school year will not receive individual iPads. The board of trustees voted 5-2 on Wednesday, May 30, to shut down phase two of the digital curriculum, which would have given iPads to elementary school students.
